Asakusa

Asakusa is a popular area of the Taito district, in downtown Tokyo, just to the east of the city centre. The area is strewn with old buildings, including innumerable shrines, and temples, and is also devoid of noisy shopping malls and high-rise condos, yet has reasonably priced eating and shopping.

This is the heart of Old Tokyo and is a must for culture-vultures. Asakusa has the best temples; specifically Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon temple). It is the largest Buddhist temple in Tokyo and a big sight to see for both Japanese and foreigners.

Thunder Gate, or Kaminarimon, is the main feature of Sensoji, with its elaborate statues and huge lantern. It is over 1,000 years old, although has been rebuilt a number of times. Nakamise shopping street starts near this gate - a covered arcade that is excellent for buying souvenirs. Not far to the east of Sensoji is Asakusa Shrine, which is the main gathering point for Sanja Matsuri festival in May.

Asakusa is also a good option for those on a budget looking for cheaper accommodation in Tokyo and is a favourite haunt for backpackers and budget travellers.
