Ueno sits west of Asakusa in the downtown district of Taito, and is known for its museums and cheap shopping.
Most attractions can be found around Ueno Park, including the majority of the best museums such as Tokyo National Museum, a massive complex covering the history of Japan.
Ueno Park lies next to Ueno Station and is also a nice place to hangout, especially when the many cherry trees are in blossom, or during a hanami party. It is also home to Ueno Zoo.
A walking tour around the area will reveal the Ameyoko shopping bazaar, which goes from Ueno Station to Okachimachi Station and has all sorts of cheap shopping and eating.
Like much of the surrounding area, Ueno is a good option for those on a budget looking for cheaper accommodation in Tokyo. It is a favourite haunt for backpackers and budget travellers and houses many ryokan style hotels and youth hostels.
